We recently created this page for two reasons: The first one being so that our potential new patients could see for themselves the results that Dr. Nieten achieves in his treatments. The second reason is to say thank you to those patients (especially the children) who worked so diligently with Dr. Nieten in wearing their appliances, doing their exercises, and following other such instructions. Dr. Nieten cannot effectively treat patients if they are not willing to do their part, and these patients did an excellent job resulting in these beautiful new smiles. The younger patients who have been included on these pages are generally quite thrilled (to say the least) that their new smiles are on our website! It is our small way rewarding them for their cooperation and hard work which made these results possible.

We feel that it is important to mention that the images selected are just a few of our best patients. The vast majority of our patients enjoy dramatic improvements in their bites and in their appearance. We could have included a far more images of even more patients on these pages, but for sake of time we included just a few of our best (there are lots of good ones!) to get the point across. Second molar extractions have become both somewhat generally controversial in the orthodontic field and specifically controversial in our own experience at Sonshine Dental Care. Commonly in orthodontic treatment today teeth are extracted to create much needed room for the remaining teeth to straighten properly and stay straight. This is not required in every case, but it does occur fairly frequently. The extraction controversy is actually not over if teeth should be extracted to make this room or not. Nearly all doctors agree that they are. Instead the controversy is about which teeth should be extracted.

Traditionally doctors have extracted the four premolars to make this room, but all too often at a later date the wisdom teeth are commonly extracted as well, usually because they are impacted. Unfortunately in these cases where the issues of 1) required space for orthodontic treatment and 2) wisom teeth complications are treated independently, the patient suffers in several ways, the most obvious of which is they had to have 8 teeth pulled in all instead of only 4! There is a much better way.

More recently it has been discovered that if the second molars are extracted instead of the pre-molars, the much needed room for orthodontic treatment is created, and the wisdom teeth (often even if impacted) are able to rotate up and erupt beautifully, filling the spot vacated by the extracted second molar! The results are no more impacted wisdom teeth, far superior orthodontic results (much bigger, broader, and more beautiful smile), and only 4 teeth are extracted instead of 8! Many traditional orthodontists are opposed to second molar extractions simply because ... well ... it isn't what has traditionally been done. When asked why they oppose second molar extractions so, they often simply respond with, "Well, that just simply isn't what should be done! We've been extracting pre-molars for years. That is just what we do!" Would you as a patient prefer a treatment that is simply done out of tradition, or would you prefer a more progressive treatment that makes far more sense and gets far better results?

Many of our patients have heard or read conflicting and inconsistent information on this subject, which has left them more than just a little confused.
