This
is yet another feature of Sonshine Dental Care that
makes us very unique. It is widely known in both the
scientific and medical world that mercury in and of
itself is a quite toxic substance. Mercury is known
to have severe side effects if it comes in prolonged
contact with human skin or is ingested. But what most
individuals (especially those who have one or more
silver fillings in their mouth) don't realize is that
the traditional silver filling can be (and often is)
as much as 50% mercury! Somehow the connection between
the toxic nature of mercury and the fact that many
individuals are living their lives with this toxic
substance in their mouth has been missed by much of
the dental world, which is amazing to us!
There
have been several studies done that have indicated
that traditional silver fillings are indeed harmful,
but many dentists are still providing them. Only more
recently have these studies been given more attention,
but not to the degree that they should be. These silver
fillings are basically causing a sustained ingestion
of a toxic substance. While the amount of mercury
being ingested is not enormous, we believe it is not
best to ingest ANY amount of a harmful substance,
whether it is radiation or toxic. Not only do we not
provide these tradition silver fillings to any of
our patients, but we actually regularly replace silver
amalgams with resins ones. This resin material is
basically a special natural tooth colored plastic
that is less visible than the silver amalgam. It is
also less susceptible to temperature change which
reduces tooth sensitivity.
If you
are concerned about the toxic effects of mercury and
would be interested in replacing your old silver fillings
with safer resins, click below to contact us and set
up an appointment for a consultation.

While the radiation
levels emitted during a radiograph (x-ray) are minimal,
exposure to radiation in and of itself is never beneficial.
While many practices take radiographs simply out of
routine, Sonshine Dental Care takes them only when
they are absolutely necessary or will definitely be
helpful. Not only is this a way we can protect the
patient from unnecessary radiation, but radiographs
are costly and taking them only when necessary keeps
the patient's costs down as well. For those who are
concerned about even mild exposure to radiation:
We
do not take radiographs routinely (but we do take
them when indicated and necessary)

Recent studies have
shown fluoride to be potentially toxic. Even though
the amount given in a typical fluoride treatment is
small, even small amounts could potentially be harmful.
Besides, we feel that the supposed benefits of fluoride
treatments can easily be achieved through good oral
hygiene. We believe that the potential risks of fluoride
treatments far outweigh the benefits.
For those who are
concerned about the toxic effects of fluoride:
Fluoride
is not necessary, we therefore do not give fluoride
applications

Bad
breath is not only unpleasant for you and offensive
to others, but it is also often an indication of a
much greater problem. Bad breath, or halitosis, is
most frequently caused by periodontal disease (gum
disease) which is, simply put, an infection in your
mouth. Periodontal disease is simply an oral hygiene
problem that, if not attended to promptly enough,
can and will result in a prolonged infection in your
mouth. We all know how serious an ear infection or
sinus infection can be. Periodontal disease is just
as serious, but actually more dangerous because its
symptoms are often less noticeable at first or seem
to be altogether unrelated. The perpetual infection
that is present in periodontal disease not only produces
offensive breath, but it can eventually cause you
to lose your teeth, it can lower your immune system
allowing you to become sick more easily, and it is
just now being looked at as a potential culprit in
heart attacks.
Halitosis
is usually best treated by treating the patient's
periodontal disease. This is done through proper training
in oral hygiene and some vitamin supplements. The
good news is that it is usually not difficult to get
rid of periodontal disease or bad breath if you are
willing to make some small changes in your life. Serious
periodontal cases may require a series of ultrasonic
scalings, but usually simple changes in approach to
hygiene and some vitamins will do the trick. Contact
us to find out what these small hygiene changes and
inexpensive supplements consist of.

TMJ
disorders are often the result
of a person's malocclusion(bad bite), whether
this bite develops naturally, is caused by an injury,
or is produced by a traditional orthodontic procedure. TMJ
disorders are actually frequently
caused by traditional orthodontic
treatments. The
best way to eliminate TMD (temporomandibular disorder)
is to prevent it through proper jaw sizing and alignment,
but TMD can usually be treated even after symptoms
begin to become noticeable. We
offer the newest and most effective treatments
of TMJ disorders

Snoring can be embarrassing
for those who suffer with it and a nuisance to those
who have to be around it. But is this the extent of
what snoring represents? It is now known that snoring
is far more than just harmlessly bothersome. It is
actually dangerous. Snoring is a sleep disorder often
associated with lower jaw position. Snoring is an
associated symptom of sleep apnea (abnormal breathing)
and is life threatening.
Studies
have shown a link between sleep apnea and strokes.

us for more information
The snore appliances
that we provide at Sonshine Dental Care actually reposition
the lower jaw to allow proper breathing. Snore appliances
eliminate snoring in at least 90% of our sleep apnea
cases. Snore appliances not only eliminate snoring
and the related health risks, but they also improve
your sleep allowing you to rest better improving your
over all health.
